Nigerians have reacted to the recent appointment of President Muhammadu Buhari as the Coronavirus response coordinator of Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
Mr Buhari was appointed on Thursday with other leaders from the sub-region urged to render their support to the Nigerian leader.
The appointment has drawn criticism from Nigerians who accused the president of not doing much to tackle the pandemic disease in his own domain let alone being saddled with the responsibility of overseeing that of the region.
A pro-democracy group, Concerned Nigerians, recently said the habit of Mr Buhari addressing Nigerians once every two weeks on how the deadly virus was being tackled by his administration is unacceptable.
The group called on the Nigerian leader to come out of hiding and show leadership or better still step aside.
On Twitter, most users on the micro-blogging site kicked against the president’s appointment saying he is incompetent. Below are some reactions captured by this reporter.
I'm surprise that pres Muhammadu Buhari being appointed as ECOWAS head of #Covid-19 pandemic. Pres @NAkufoAddo of ???????? deserved this position more than any other West African head of State. If there are reasons of this appointment more than competent I think someone to educate me.

ECOWAS really made a mistake by appointing somebody who cannot perform his internal assignment with a merits.
Better to change your appointment.— Comrd Abubakar Usman (@comrd_abubakar) April 24, 2020
The appointment of Buhari as ECOWAS leader @covid19 is useless is a neglect to human rights violations in Nigeria. A president who barely address his own citizens nor even hear their plead. Nigeria president is a clown. #shameonecowas pic.twitter.com/qIdjmlmBpD

ECOWAS heads of government are as useless as their appointment, @MBuhari that hardly address and update Nigerians on #coronavirus pandemic will champion #Covid_19 in west Africa.
Did you see why this guys don't have brain?, if it's because of money Nigeria is seriously broke. https://t.co/l8FmNdKFf0— Lets talk about #BiafraGenocide. (@nnamdi_leonard) April 23, 2020
The ECOWAS that appointed a coward hiding under his bed as head of COVID-19 pandemic is doomed forever. No wonder the region looks like a dilapidated building. How can you see the Ghanaian President then put clueless Buhari to be in charge of anything?

This ECOWAS thing just proves that west Africa is just as corrupt as Nigeria , can one of them boldly tell me on what basis did Buhari merit his said appointment ????????????

ECOWAS giving oga bubu appointment is like sending a deaf and dumb to go and broadcast news

This ECOWAS appointment is shocking and laughable.

The greatest mistake that the ECOWAS leaders have made is to appoint @MBuhari as the leader of the fight against Covid 19. This is a cataclysmic error which they will deeply regret. He can barely manage himself & now you ask him to manage a sub-region of 400 million people?

Congratulations to our dear indefatigable president whose daily effort in the fight against COVID 19 has earned him this laudable appointment by ECOWAS to champion Africa fight against the pandemic.
I salute their tactfulness, no other president in Africa comes close.
