Okezie Ikpeazu, the governor of Abia State has tested positive for Coronavirus disease.
This is coming days after two state commissioners in his cabinet contracted the pandemic disease.
The governor’s status was disclosed in a statement signed by John Kalu, the commissioner for Information in the state.
Mr Kalu in the statement released Monday morning said the governor has gone into self-isolation and has handed over the affairs of the state to his deputy.
“Consequent on the above, the Governor has directed his Deputy, Rt Hon Ude Oko Chukwu, to act on his behalf pending his full resumption of duties,” the statement partly read.
“We wish to urge all Abians to take the fight against COVID-19 serious as the disease is real but not a death sentence. Our state has the resources to manage patients back to good health,” it added.
In the latest statistics released by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) the state currently has the highest number of daily cases of the pandemic disease, recording 67 cases out of 260 infections published Sunday evening.
