Bola Tinubu, the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has promised to double the duration of learning in higher institutions in the country if he is elected president this year.
Mr Tinubu, a former Lagos governor, made the vow on Thursday while campaigning in Osogbo, the capital of Osun State.
He said he will ensure students in higher institutions, plagued by incessant industrial actions, spend eight years rather than the current four years programme with exception to highly specialised studies such as law and medicine, which last five and six years respectively.
“Those of you in school, write it down,” Mr Tinubu told the gathering. “Call me a bastard if you spend more than eight years in school. You will be in school for eight years.”
His comments have sparked widespread criticism on social media with many reiterating that his worsening physical health was now affecting his mental awareness.
A spokesperson for his campaign team was not reachable for clarification as at press time.
