Senate condemns sit-at-home in South-East, demands Simon Ekpa’s extradition

The Nigerian Senate has condemned the continuous sit-at-home exercise imposed by pro-Biafran agitators in the South-East geo-political zone.

The exercise was initially introduced by the Indigenous People Of Biafra (IPOB) a foremost secessionist movement in the Igbo predominant region.

The group said the exercise was initiated to protest against the extraordinary rendition of its leader Nnamdi Kanu, from Kenya in 2021, but aborted it when another disciple of the secessionist leader, Simon Ekpa, hijacked and continued to enforce it with his armed militia.

Mr Ekpa is based in Finland but was recently arrested and released by the Finnish authorities after being interrogated.

During plenary, the red chamber, presided over by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, urged the federal government to engage Finnish authorities with the aim of extraditing Mr Ekpa for prosecution.

It also resolved to invite the Minister of Foreign Affairs (when appointed) and relevant stakeholders to carry out thorough investigation as well as bring other sponsors of the act to book.
