Ahead of the September 19 governorship election in Edo State, the Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare II, has warned the deputy governor, Philip Shuaibu, to caution his political thugs causing violence in the state.
The revered monarch gave the warning yesterday during the signing of peace pact between Godwin Obaseki, the state governor and candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and his opponent, Osagie Ize-Iyamu of the All Progressive Congress (APC).
There have been spike of violence in the state since gubernatorial campaigns kicked off with the APC and PDP accusing themselves of insisting viciousness.
Speaking on the situation yesterday, Oba Ewuare II cautioned actors and specially cited intelligence report naming the deputy governor as allegedly instigating violence.
“Philip, they said you are the tough one inside, you must behave please,” the monarch pleaded.
“Tell your boys if it’s you, if…tell your boys to cease fire that your papa have told you they should cease fire. Enough is enough, I don’t want to hear shootings, guns anymore, enough is enough. I don’t want you to kill yourselves because of office,” he added.
Mr Obaseki is seeking a second term in office and his predecessor, Adams Oshiomhole, who helped him got the top job is now sponsoring Ize-Iyamu to oppose his re-election bid.
Few days ago, Oshiomhole escaped death, saying the incident which claimed the lives of two police officers was an assassination attempt on his life.
