Children reportedly playing with a disused grenade lost their lives in Borno State on Thursday.
Reporting the incident which occurred in Ngala area of the state, Daily Trust which quoted Agence France-Presse (AFP) sources said the children, five in number, picked up the explosive in a field while grazing.
“The five children picked up the explosive while herding in a field outside the town and it exploded in their hands as they were playing with it,” the AFP quoted a militiaman whose account was corroborated by a colleague.
“Two of them died on the spot while the other three died in hospital in Mada, inside Cameroon,” the source added.
The town which borders Cameroon was one of those seized by Boko Haram terrorists who were reportedly sharing explosives disguised as toys to children.
The combine efforts of Nigerian and Chadian forces saw the reclaiming of the territory from the terrorists in September 2015.
