Governor Okezie Ikpeazu’s counsel that losers during March 18th Abia State governorship election should not bother to challenge the outcome in court has been jettisoned by his party, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
“I appeal to every candidate in this election not to distract the incoming administration with court cases, so that they will settle down and deal with the very demanding business of governance,” the outgoing governor pleaded after Alex Otti of the Labour Party LP) was announced as the winner of the exercise with over 175,000 votes.
“Let us break this negative trend of subjecting our Governors to endless litigations and allow them to concentrate on providing good governance,” he advised.
But in a statement on Tuesday, the PDP said it has directed its legal arm to challenge the declaration of Mr Otti as the winner by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
“The legal department of the Abia PDP will release the details of its petitions in the next 24 hours and head to the Election Petition Tribunal to challenge the declaration of Alex Otti of the Labour Party as the winner of the March 18, 2023 governorship election,” Abraham Amah, PDP’s vice chairman/acting state publicity secretary, hinted.
The party added that it was going to court because the LP is in court to challenge some state assembly seats it lost to the PDP.
