The Supreme Court on Friday affirmed the nomination of Sherrif Oborevwori as the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Delta State.
Mr Oborevwori who is the speaker of the State House of Assembly has been at loggerheads with another aspirant of the party, David Edevbie, reportedly backed by a former governor of the state, James Ibori.
Backed by Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, he polled 590 votes to trounce the former finance commissioner under the Ibori administration who scored 113 during the party’s primary in May.
Delivering judgment, a five-member panel of the apex court, upheld the decision of the Court of Appeal delivered on August 29 which voided and set aside the judgment of the Federal High Court of July 7, 2022, that nullified his nomination on grounds of certificate forgery and perjury.
Justice Tijani Abubakar in a lead judgment held that the grievous allegations of supply of false information and certificate forgery brought against the Speaker cannot be proved beyond a reasonable doubt with the use of originating summons.
