Kano assembly to review law creating emirates

The Kano State House of Assembly has made known its intention to review the state’s Emirs (Appointment and Deposition) Law.

The law, reviewed in 2019 and assented to by then-governor Umar Ganduje, was instrumental in ousting Sanusi Lamido Sanusi as Emir of the state the following year.

The legislation recommended the creation of four more Emirates to apparently whittle down the influence of Mr Sanusi who was at loggerheads with Mr Ganduje before the former was dethroned.

During plenary on Tuesday, the assembly’s majority leader, Lawan Hussaini Dala, moved a motion for the amendment of the law creating Rano, Gaya, Karaye and Bichi in addition to Kano as emirates.

Mr Dala said the legislation and the new emirates were not conceived in good faith, a submission the house agreed with and resolved to amend the law.
