Goodluck Jonathan, Nigeria’s former president, has denied sacking Reno Omokri, one of his aides, during his reign as president.
Mr Omokri, during the reign of the former president, was his Special Assistance on New Media. Omoyele Sowore, publisher of Sahara Reporters, was seen on social media video clip, saying the now former presidential aide was sacked by his principal.
Mr Sowore in the trending clip said Omokri was fired during the build up to the 2015 presidential election for criminal activities he engaged in. But in a statement authored by Ikechukwu Eze, media adviser to the former president, Jonathan said Omokri served throughout his the lifetime of his administration.
“For the avoidance of doubt, we wish to state that at no time did former President Jonathan ever sack Mr. Omokri while he was in office,” the Saturday statement partly read.
“Mr. Omokri was appointed on August 17, 2011, and served meritoriously until May 29, 2015. His record of service can be verified at the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation.
“While he is no longer a staff of President Jonathan, Mr. Omokri enjoys the gratitude of many Nigerians including Dr. Goodluck Jonathan for his patriotic services to Nigeria,” it added.
