The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) says its operative behind the leaked video showing former Anambra governor, Willie Obiano, in custody is undergoing disciplinary actions.
A video clip which surfaced online at the weekend showed Mr Obiano, arrested on Thursday at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport in Lagos, in custody, drinking from ragolis water.
He wore a red boxer and a white T-shirt while sitting on a bench from where he drank the water from. The clip showed the person behind the camera had an office desk in front.
Most Nigerians reacted, condemning the “inhumane treatments” meted the the immediate-past governor of Anambra State. Many argue that the alleged drug trafficker and former head of police Intelligence Response Team (IRT) Abba Kyari was not treated in a similar manner.
In their reaction contained in a statement by their Chairman, Igwe Nnaemeka Achebe of Onitsha on Monday, traditional rulers in the South-East state lambasted the anti-graft agency, saying such was least expected of it.
In a statement by its spokesperson, Wilson Uwujaren, the EFCC distanced itself from the clip, saying the operative behind the leaked video is being punished for the “odious act.”
“The attention of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has been drawn to a trending video showing the former Governor of Anambra State, Chief Willie Obiano in the custody of the Commission,” Mr Uwujaren said. “The Commission wishes to distance itself from the said video which is completely at variance with the established Standard Operating Procedure of the EFCC.
“A discreet investigation ordered upon discovery of the leak has revealed the errant officer behind the odious act and he is currently being subjected to appropriate disciplinary action,” he added.
