The State Security Service (SSS) says it does not have any social media page or handle on the internet.
The spokesman of the self-styled Department of State Services (DSS) reiterated this in a statement signed on Monday.
Peter Afunanya, spokesman of the secret police, signed the statement also reproduced on the website of the agency.
“The DSS does not operate an Instagram page or any other social media handle,” Mr Afunanya said. “Therefore, any page which claims to be associated with the DSS is completely fake and aimed at deceiving unsuspecting members of the public.
“The Service hereby advises against any interaction with such accounts. It also restates that its official web address is http://www.dss.gov.ng/,” it added.
