A federal high court in Abuja has barred the federal government and its agencies from re-arresting Godwin Emefiele, former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, without a court order.
Justice Olukayode Adeniyi who gave the order on Monday also awarded the sum of 100 million naira against the Tinubu administration in favour of the ousted apex bank official, for the violation of his right to personal liberty.
The court said the prolonged detention of the plaintiff without trial was a flagrant violation of his fundamental rights.
Mr Emefiele arrested in June 2023 had approached the court in a fundamental human rights suit filed following his prolonged detention in the custody of the State Security Services (SSS) shortly after his suspension from office by President Bola Tinubu.
He asked the court to order the respondents to pay him N1 billion as damages and further restrained them from re-arresting him.
