Two Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidates emerged at parallel primaries which held in Edo state on Thursday.
While Philip Shaibu, the deputy governor aspiring to succeed his principal, emerged winner of the exercise which took place at a different location, Asuelimen Ighodalo, backed by Governor Godwin Obaseki, was declared winner of the race that took place at Samuel Ogbemudia stadium.
Trouble began after a group of protesters who claimed to be delegates were denied entry into the stadium.
The protesting delegates reportedly moved to the residence of Mr Shaibu to register their displeasure and thereafter convened at another location to elect the deputy governor as the candidate of the party in the September governorship election.
The exercise at Samuel Ogbemudia stadium later commenced with Mr Ighodalo, a renowned businessman, emerging winner with over 500 votes.
“I, therefore, declare Asuelimen Ighodalo the winner of this concluded primary today with a total vote of 577. Thank you, ladies and gentlemen,” Governor Dauda Lawal of Zamfara who is the chief returning officer for the election declared.
