President Muhammadu Buhari has presented the budget of next year to the National Assembly.
Mr Buhari made the presentation of the appropriation bill to the joint session of the lawmaking arm of government on Tuesday.
The president who arrived at the complex in the afternoon, announced that N125 billion was allocated to the National Assembly while N110 billion was allocated to the Judiciary.
Below are allocation to various ministries as announced by the president.
Works and Housing – N262 billion
Transportation – N123 billion
UBEC – N112 billion
Defence – N100 billion
Agriculture – N83 billion
Water Resources – N82 billion
Education – N48 billion
Health – N46 billion
North East Dec Commission – N38 billion
SIPs – N30 billion
FCT – N28 billion
Niger Delta – N24 billion
Budget to be ready before year end
President of the Nigerian Senate, Ahmad Lawan, before the presentation charged heads of government ministries to ensure that they appear before lawmakers and defend their budget.
Mr Lawan said if procedures are properly followed the budget will be passed before the end of the year.
“In order for timely passage, all MDAs are expected to appear before the Committees for the defense of their Budget estimates within the month of October. We have earmarked the month of October to be the sole window for all Budget defense activities in this year, by all MDAs,” the top lawmaker said in his welcome speech.
“In this regard, our Committees will be expected to conclude their work on Budget defense within October, this year. The subsequent necessary legislative work will be carried out in November and December, leading to eventual passage before the end of this year,” Lawan added.
