APC will be deserted by 2023 – Senate President’s aide

Abubakar Usman, the Special Assistant on New Media to the Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, has predicted that the ruling party will be deserted by 2023.

Mr Usman stated this on Saturday in a tweet, saying those who have benefited from the party will either defect to other political parties or retire from politics.

“By 2023, those who joined APC because of what they stand to chop when the food is cooked and has chopped will be smiling their way to other parties or even retire to their chops, while those who love and Laboured for the party will be crying their eyes out,” the legislative aide said.

Backstory

Three political parties, the Congress for Progressive Congress (CPC), Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) and a faction of the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) teamed up to form the now ruling All Progressive Congress (APC) in 2013.

The sole aim of the then main opposition party was to chase out the then ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), which had piloted the affairs of the country since 1999, from power. That mission was accomplished in 2015 when the APC dethroned an incumbent president, Goodluck Jonathan, who sought re-election on the platform of the PDP.

Muhammadu Buhari, the candidate of the APC at the time finally realised his political ambition despite trying severally on the platform of the CPC but failed.

Mr Buhari who is currently doing another term in office thwarted the attempt of the PDP to get back to power in the last presidential election. Atiku Abubakar, a former vice president flew the ticket of the opposition party in 2019.

The president is largely seen as the uniting force in the APC. Many are of the opinion that when he completes his second term in 2023, the platform which helped him into power will go into extinction.

This is because the presidential ticket of the APC, it is believed, will go to the south, although the party is yet to make known its position pertaining to that. The arrangements is said not to augur well for some individuals in the North who consider themselves influential and have insisted that power must not leave the region.

With Adams Oshiomhole on the saddle of leadership, the next presidential ticket of the party is likely coming to the south and his rumored favoured candidate is Bola Tinubu, a national leader of the APC and a former governor of Lagos State.

Mr Tinubu confirmed this when some powerful force were hell bent on ousting Oshiomhole from his position. The former Lagos governor is an ally of the former Labour leader. He is said to be banking on his support for the party’s next presidential ticket.
