Wike signs anti-open grazing bill into law

Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State has signed into law the anti-open grazing bill recently passed by the state house of assembly.

Mr Wike gave his assent to the “Rivers State Prohibition of Open Rearing and Grazing Bill, 2021” on Thursday.

The speedy assent to the bill might not be unconnected to the September 1 deadline by 17 Southern state governors set to have the law passed across in their respective domains.

“It is no longer a story. All of us know what our people have suffered in terms of this open grazing. Today, all Nigerians have come to accept the reality that open grazing is no longer fashionable,” Mr Wike was quoted to have said in a statement by his spokesman Kelvin Ebiri. “Even our brothers in the north have agreed that it is no longer fashionable.”
