Bola Tinubu, a national leader of the All Progressive Congress (APC) has stated why Nigerians renewed the mandate they gave President Muhammadu Buhari at the concluded presidential election.
Mr Tinubu, a political ally of the president, said the people re-elected Mr Buhari because they believe he is the best among the contestants of the top job.
“The Nigerian people do not elect politicians to office simply to watch on as they maneuver and jostle for position at the next election,” Tinubu said in a statement on Sunday.
“The people elect those who they believe will be the best public servants, committed to the national wellbeing.
“This is why they reelected in President Buhari while rejecting the horde of political jobbers that constitute the PDP,” he added.
The politician also denied insinuations in some quarters that he influenced the emergence of candidates adopted by the party to lead the incoming 9th National Assembly.
Report in some quarters said with the adoption of Ahmed Lawan to head the next Senate and that of Femi Gbajabiamila to oversee the affairs of the 9th House of Representatives, the APC chieftain has began his strategy to ensure he takes over from the president at the expiration of the latter’s tenure.
Tinubu reacting said with the election just being concluded and the president yet to be sworn in, it was too early to start talking about who will succeed the president when he might have served out his second term in 2023.
