President Muhammadu Buhari says he will not make public his preferred candidate who is expected to succeed him next year when his final term in office winds down.
Mr Buhari spoke on Channels Television on Wednesday said naming his preferred candidate will endanger his life.
“I better keep it secret,” the president opted for when asked to name a candidate in his party that will get his support. “No I wouldn’t because he may be eliminated if I mention.”
Mr Buhari who won the 2015 general election and was re-elected in 2019 is not constitutionally allowed to vie for the position again.
In his party, the All Progressive Congress (APC), Vice president Yemi Osinbajo and former Lagos State governor, Bola Tinubu are top politicians eyeing the position though neither of them is yet to publicly declare interest.
Former president Goodluck Jonathan whom he succeeded is reportedly being wooed to defect to the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC) to contest again, a route some Northern power blocs believe is the shortest way for their region to regain power after 2023.
Mr Jonathan who lost power to Mr Buhari is still entitled to a term of four years.
