Why EFCC arrested Okorocha: Aide

Sam Onwuemeodo, the media aide to Senator Rochas Okorocha, representing Imo West at the Senate, has confirmed the arrest of his principal.

Mr Okorocha was picked up by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) at about 4pm, Premium Times reported.

The former Imo governor was arrested after failing to honour an invitation extended to him by the anti-graft agency.

Speaking on his principal’s latest ordeal, Mr Onwuemeodo said the arrest of the lawmaker was based on an old case filed against him by his successor Governor Hope Uzodinma of Imo State who has has been at loggerheads with him since the latter took over.

“I don’t think EFCC has a new matter with Okorocha,” the aide told the news medium. “Remember that after he left as governor, the (Imo) state government wrote petitions against him, the EFCC came and investigated this matter.

“The matter between Okorocha and EFCC has been pending in various courts, it is not a new matter.

“Unless they must have invited him to come and clarify one or two issues,” he added.

Although we could not independently verify if Okorocha will be released later today, he is still being detained and questioned as at 10pm Tuesday night.

We learnt his lawyers are presently waiting for the next line of action.
