Why Almajiri can’t be abolished in the North – Shehu Sani

Shehu Sani, a former lawmaker has opined why Almajiri system cannot be abolished in Northern Nigeria.

Almajiri children are reportedly willing tools in the hands of Northern politicians whom they use to achieve their personal aim.

They are often abandoned to their own fate after being exploited by those taking advantage of them.

TODAY POLITICS recalls that some of them were used by opposition politicians to pelt stones at the convoy of former president Goodluck Jonathan when he went to campaign for re-election in the North prior to the 2015 general election.

Recently, the government of Kano State banned street begging which the Almajiri are known to have resort to after being used and abandoned.

While some hailed it, others are against the initiative which is reportedly aimed at consolidating the free and compulsory primary and secondary schools education policy in the state.

For the former Kaduna Central lawmaker, the decision is not the permanent solution to the problem because politicians seeking political powers will continue to exploit the uneducated children at will even after criminalising them.

“They use Almajiri for Rallies, elections and census and criminalize them after Rallies, elections and census; And will reuse them for the next Rallies, election and census,” Mr Sani said in a tweet on Thursday.
