What Army saw in my phone before handing me over to SSS – Chiwetalu Agu

Celebrated actor Chiwetalu Agu who recently regained his freedom from the State Security Service (SSS) has narrated what transpired after his arrest.

Mr Agu who was on a charitable mission at Upper Iweka in Onitsha, Anambra State was arrested after being manhandled, the video clip of the incident showed.

The army accused him of inciting and soliciting support for the Indigenous People Of Biafra (IPOB), an accusation he denied while explaining the apparel he wore that got him into trouble.

Arrested on Thursday last week he was temporarily released Friday morning before being handed over to Nigeria’s secret police self-named Department of State Services (DSS).

He was flown to the Abuja office of the DSS which has a history of repressing and intimidating dissenting voices. He regained his freedom Tuesday evening after the intervention of Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN).

In an interview with Broadway Television, the veteran actor said although nothing incriminating was found on his telephone, senior army officer who searched the electronic device found Godly contents therein.

“I’m a child of God, I’m not a criminal,” Mr Agu posited. “All they saw in my phone was all about God, humanity and nothing incriminating.”

He denied being maltreated while in custody.

“They interviewed me for a whole day, the senior army officers were civil and did not get anything that was incriminating from my phone before they handed me over to DSS,” he added. “They didn’t manhandle me till I got to Abuja office where I stayed for two days.”
