Shehu Sani, lawmaker representing Kaduna Central at the Senate has revealed what must be done for the creation of state and local government police to take effect.
President Muhammadu Buhari had on Monday received the report of the presidential panel on the reform of special anti-robbery squad (SARS), at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
The report recommended the creation of state police to help curtail the rising insecurity across the country.
Receiving the report, the president thanked the panel for their work and directed Mohammed Adamu, the inspector-general of police to meet with the NHRC to work out the modalities of implementing the report within three months from the day it was received.
But the outgoing lawmaker has said before the creation of the force, the Nigerian Constitution has to be amended as this is the only way possible for the implementation of the report.
“State or Local Government Police cannot be created or just be approved by the Federal Government or the President without a constitutional amendment,” Mr Sani said in a tweet on Monday.
Meanwhile, a former minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode, has called bluff the possibility of creating the state and local government police under the administration of Mr Buhari.
