Shehu Sani, a former Kaduna Central senator, has knocked Northern State governors for abandoning insecurity bedeviling the region to support moves to regulate the social media.
Arising from its Kaduna meeting yesterday which had police boss, Mohammed Adamu, Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, traditional rulers among other stakeholders, the Northern Governors Forum (NGF) backed the resolve of the present administration to regulate free speech.
Lai Mohammed, Information Minister, says free speech which he utilised during his days in the opposition to rise to power could destabilize the country if left unchecked.
Despite rejection by Nigerians and civil society organisations, Mr Mohammed said President Muhammadu Buhari remained defiant in his resolve to regulate social media.
Backing the president’s move, the Northern governors also praised leaders of the region who deliberately used ethnic and religious sentiments to scuttle protests demanding end to police brutality.
Blasting the governors is Mr Sani who queried why the states helmsmen left insecurity in the region to discuss social media.
“Northern Governors; Their Kinsmen are being slaughtered daily by Bandits & insurgents, their people are daily being Kidnapped & impoverished by ransom, their women raped & their villages are under siege,” the former lawmaker said on Twitter Tuesday.
“Their people live in Fear & Funerals. Yet, Social Media is their problem,” he added.
