Senate resumes plenary, hurriedly approves Buhari’s loan request

The Nigerian Senate on Tuesday resumed its legislative business at the red chamber, amidst the lockdown in the Federal Capital Territory, (FCT).

Upon resumption, the red chamber hurriedly approved the loan request of President Muhammadu Buhari.

Mr Buhari had written the upper legislative chamber, notifying it of his intention to borrow N850 billion to finance some projects and programmes in the 2020 budget.

In his letter read at the start of plenary by Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, the president said the fund will be sourced from capital market.

The president also noted that he has directed the Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning to make herself available to provide any additional information or clarification which the lawmakers may require.

The lawmakers, after the reading, skipped protocol by suspending Rule One, hurriedly considered and approved the loan request through voice vote.
