The Nigerian Senate has confirmed the appointment of Farouk Yahaya as the Chief Of Army Staff (COAS).
The confirmation was after the adoption of a report submitted by Aliyu Wamakko, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Defence.
Mr Wamakko during his presentation said the army chief met all the requirements expected of him with no petition against his nomination which was cleared by the State Security Service (SSS).
“He was questioned on ethics, Nigeria’s war on terror and banditry,” he said. “The committee was satisfied with the robust interaction with the nominee.
“The nomination is in line with section 217 of the constitution. The committee did not receive any petition and he was cleared by the State Security Services.
“The nominee presented his credentials. The committee is satisfied with his general performance. The committee recommends that general Faruk Yahaya be confirmed as the chief of staff,” he added.
Senator Ali Ndume who chairs the Senate Committee on Army, thereafter called for the speedily confirmation of Yahaya to enable him carry out his duties without any hindrance as he is in acting capacity at the moment.
Mr Yahaya, appointed last month, was thereafter confirmed as the army chief after his nomination was put to a voice vote.
He succeeds Ibrahim Attahiru who died in a plane crash in Kaduna State while on an official assignment.
