President Muhammadu Buhari has said the resort to self-help by Nigerians is the cause of killings and counter killings in the country.
Before now, it used to be reports of killings by alleged Fulani herdsmen whom are accused of demanding farm produce by feeding their animals with the agricultural produce.
Atimes those who attempt to resort to self-help end up being arraigned for choosing the options rather than involving security agencies in settling dispute.
However, some Nigerians have accused security agencies of taking sides during a dispute. Prominent among them are: Former Chief of Army Staff, Theophilus Danjuma and Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Mohammad Abubakar III.
Condemning a recent killing in Kaduna which occurred earlier in the week between two communities in Kaduna (Fulani and Addara) President Buhari blamed the resort to self-help as the reason for the rising killings and counter killings.
“Killing people in the name of revenge is not acceptable,” Garba Shehu, the president’s spokesman quoted his principal as saying in a statement Tuesday evening.
“The recourse to self-help, instead of the law of the land is the real cause of the killings and counter killings between the two (Kaduna) communities,” the president said while warning that no one has the right to take the law in his or her own hands.
