Reps pass bills for development commissions in four geo-political zones

The House of Representatives has endorsed bills seeking to establish development commissions in four geo-political zones.

The bills seeking to establish South-East Development Commission (SEDC) and South-West Development Commission (SWDC) were passed on Thursday during plenary.

Equally approved were bills seeking to establish North-Central Development Commission (NCDC) and North-West Development Commission (NWDC).

In 2019, House speaker Femi Gbajabiamila and 80 other suspected Yoruba-speaking members of the lower chamber clamoured for the establishment of SWDC citing the already existing North-East Development Commission (NEDC) established in 2017 aftermath of the Boko Haram insurgency.

The request prompted other geo-political zones to equally demand same for their respective zones the same year.

The call for South-South Development Commission (SSDC) followed suit in 2020.
