Rape now pandemic in Nigeria – Atiku speaks on rape, murder of UNIBEN student

Atiku Abubakar, former vice president, has condemned the rape and murder of Vera Uwaila, a student of University of Benin (UNIBEN).

The 23-year-old was killed last week Wednesday when she went to study in a church in Benin. Her murder has drawn condemnation from Nigerians, including President Muhammadu Buhari who ordered the culprits be fished out.

Lending his voice in condemning the act, the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the last election said rape was now like a pandemic in the country.

While commiserating with the bereaved family, he called for the review of laws pertaining to rape to ensure culprits are made to pay for crimes committed.

“I just spoke to the family of the late Uwa Omozuwa. I expressed my deepest condolences over her rape and murder. I feel their anguish. Sadly, rape is now a pandemic in our country,” Atiku said in series of tweets Wednesday afternoon.

“It is time we reviewed the laws on rape to ensure that there are no escape routes in the investigation, prosecution, conviction and adequate punishment for this heinous crime,” he added.

Meanwhile, the police has said it has arrested the suspected murderer of the deceased.
