Political campaign aborted as gunmen, security agencies clash in Anambra

The campaign train of the ruling All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) in Anambra State met it waterloo on Tuesday with its mission to Ihiala local government area aborted halfway.

The state’s ruling party had gone to campaign at Odoata Primary School in the area when gunmen stormed the venue and opened fire at the gathering.

A source which confided in TODAY POLITICS said it could not be confirmed wether Governor Willie Obiano was present at the gathering as reported in sections of the media.

Security agencies at the venue were said to responded and the shoot out lasted for over two hours according to locals who confided in this reporter.

Video clips circulating on social media showed residents running helter-skelter with no vehicular movements in sight.

Another clip showed soldiers who might have been overwhelmed by the superior firepower of the armed men taking refuge at another nearby educational facility.

Although the attackers were said to have later withdrew from the scene, backup soldiers banking on intelligence gathered raided Our Lady school of nursing in the area in search of the gunmen whom they believed escaped through the medical facility.
