PDP summons Abbo as assaulter Senator shuns plenary

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has summoned its lawmaker who assaulted a lady in Abuja recently.

Senator Elisha Abbo who represents Adamawa North at the upper legislative chamber was recently seen in a video clip inflicting pains on a lady at an adult toys shop.

The victim, who intervened when theĀ HIV/AIDS carrier ordered the arrest of the shop attendant on alleged insults meted out to him, received series of slap from the lawmaker who belongs to the PDP and is said to be the youngest at the red chamber.

Although Mr Abbo confirmed the incident actually took place, he said he was in the shop to ensure justice is done to his sister who was assaulted in the building.

The Nigerian Senate has constituted a committee to investigate the matter and report back to it two weeks from today.

While condemning the action of Mr Abbo, the opposition party in a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan, on Wednesday, summoned the lawmaker to appear before that party’s National Working Committee (NWC) for questioning.

“Though this is a personal conduct of an individual which has no bearing with the culture of our party, the PDP however holds that no responsible person will condone such an attitude,” the PDP said.

“In the light of this, the NWC has commenced investigation into the matter and summons Senator Elisha Abbo in line with the provisions of the Constitution of the PDP and code of conduct of our members.

“The PDP, at all levels of engagement, is reputed for her utmost respect and commitment towards the rights, safety and wellbeing of our citizens, particularly our women and cannot tolerate any callous assault on any Nigerian.

“The PDP therefore assures Nigerians that it will always stand on the side of justice and will never spare a thought in taking action on any of its members found wanting, particularly those elected or appointed into public offices,” the statement by the opposition partly read.

Meanwhile, the embattled lawmaker was absent at the Wednesday plenary where the committee to probe his outburst was constituted.

He had attended the Tuesday session and interacted well with his colleagues at the red chamber.
