PDP screens Obaseki for Edo primary

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has screened Godwin Obaseki, governor of Edo State, who recently joined the party.

Mr Obaseki, seeking a second term in office, was screened yesterday after purchasing the expression of interest and nomination forms of the opposition party on Friday.

The new entrant is expected to participate in the party primary rescheduled to Thursday.

His former party, the All Progressive Congress (APC) which he previously used its platform to get to power, disqualified him from seeking re-election under it. The party said the academic credentials of the incumbent governor were deceptive but political analysts are citing his battle with the his predecessor, Adams Oshiomhole, as reason for his disqualification.

Mr Oshiomhole, the now suspended national chairman of the APC, is now fronting another governorship aspirants, Osagie Ize-Iyamu, whom he had earlier described as a thief who should not be trusted with public funds.

The primary of the APC is expected to hold on Monday, June 22, 2020 where Mr Ize-Iyamu is expected to clinch the ticket of the party to participate in the September 19 governorship election.
