Passengers get ₦100,000 each as ISWAP gifts old banknotes in Borno

Passengers in Guzamala local government area of Borno State were gifted N100,000 each by suspected members of the Islamic State of West Africa Province (ISWAP).

Daily Trust, citing local sources, reports that the development occurred on Saturday along the Maiduguri/Monguno highway.

The terrorists heavily armed reportedly took shade under a nearby tree along the road with bags which had the old naira banknotes stashed therein.

“We left Monguno at about 12 noon. As we approached Mairari, there were no existing checkpoints in the area; we were apprehensive,” a source, Bakura Ibrahim, said.

“They stopped us and asked if we were going to Maiduguri, then they started giving each person 100,000 old naira notes, but we could not believe it. They gave each occupant of the Golf Volkswagen,” the source added.

Another source which confirmed the development said the terrorists urged them to exchange the old banknotes at the banks.

“The group simply told us, If you think you can go to their banks and change it to new naira, go and do so; may Allah make it beneficial to you.”
