There are no plans to immediately reopen Lekki tollgate, the Lekki Concession Company (LCC) said Monday.
The premises was where soldiers reportedly massacre dozens during the historic global demonstrations demanding extensive police reforms.
The incident which occurred on October 20, 2020 is being probed by the Lagos State judicial panel. Five of nine members of the board voted for the resumption of the protest venue which has remained shut since the massacre, a decision that angered youths who opposed the ruling saying it should remain shut pending the outcome of investigations.
On Saturday, the opposing young population stormed the tollgate to demonstrate but had the police to contain with. About 40 of them arrested and detained were later released same day.
In a press briefing, the LCC Managing Director, Yomi Omomuwasan, said while company has regained possession of the property, reopening it immediately is not its priority at the moment.
“It does not mean that when we take possession, once we rebuild or once we take possession or finish the evaluation and the next thing is to start tolling. No. It takes a process,” Mr Omomuwasan said in Lagos.
“People are engaging us to say, ‘How do we offer a better service, how do we improve our services and we are ready to listen to that kind of good feedback. So, we need to work on a lot if things internally before you see us starting to toll,” he added.
