Nnamdi Kanu denies jumping bail, remanded in DSS custody

Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People Of Biafra (IPOB) has denied jumping bail as being posited by the federal government.

Mr Kanu, extradited back to the country on Sunday and arraigned on Tuesday, while speaking at a federal high court sitting in Abuja, explained that he fled the country in September 2017 when military personnel staged an attack on his Afaraukwu home in Abia State where he resides.

“I did not jump bail, My lord,” Mr Kanu said. “I only went underground when the Nigerian armed forces raided my residence in Abia State, which led to the death of some people. So, I had to run for my safety.”

The trial judge, Binta Nyako, ordered the detention of Mr Kanu in the custody of the State Security Service (SSS) at the request of the prosecuting counsel, Magaji Labaran, and adjourned the trial till July 26.
