Nigerians react to Senate’s approval of Buhari’s N850bn loan request

Nigerians are reacting to the approval of N850 loan request from President Muhammadu Buhari by the Nigerian Senate.

The Senate had on Tuesday hurriedly approved the loan when it resumed plenary same day.

Mr Buhari had written the upper legislative chamber, notifying it of his intention to borrow N850 billion to finance some projects and programmes in the 2020 budget.

In his letter read at the start of plenary by Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, the president said the fund will be sourced from capital market.

The president also noted that he has directed the Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning to make herself available to provide any additional information or clarification which the lawmakers may require.

The lawmakers, after the reading, skipped protocol by suspending Rule One, hurriedly considered and approved the loan request through voice vote.

After the approval, the red chamber has adjourned indefinitely, a move Nigerians have criticised.

The opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) also criticised the approval of the loan, urging the Nigerian Senate to ensure strict oversight monitoring and handling of the money.

Below are some reactions of Nigerians on Twitter who largely criticised the nod of the Senate.
