Nigerians not required to submit phones’ IMEI number, we’ll capture it automatically: NCC

There is no need for Nigerians to troop out to submit the International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) numbers of their mobile phones, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has said.

Earlier reports have it that just like they throng out to obtain and link their Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) cards to their National Identity Number (NIN), Nigerians will on July tow similar part to submit the 15-digit number to their various network service providers.

But clarifying that such gathering will not be needed, Ikechukwu Adinde, the director of public affairs at the NCC said the process of extracting the required details is automatic.

“The reports in question have emanated from a section of the Revised National Identity Policy for SIM Card Registration recently launched by President Muhammadu Buhari and which has been uploaded on the Commission’s website,” Mr Adinde said in a statement on Friday.

“It is pertinent to state that the Commission is in the process of deploying a Device Management System (DMS). The DMS will essentially protect subscribers against phone theft and will identify and enable the elimination of fake devices from the networks. The system will capture IMEI automatically without any requirement for subscribers to submit same,” he added.
