Nigerians are illiterates, be fair to my regime, Buhari begs historians

President Muhammadu Buhari has described Nigerians as those who are ignorant and lack knowledge.

Mr Buhari gave the description when he played host to state governors of the All Progressive Congress (APC) in his hometown of Daura, Katsina State on Thursday.

The Nigerian leader, according to his spokesman, Garba Shehu, begged historians to be fair to his administration so that politicians will not bank on the ignorance of the people to get to power.

“Intellectuals and historians should be fair to us so that those who are looking for leadership positions will not exploit the political ignorance or lack of knowledge of the people,’’ Mr Buhari pleaded in a statement his spokesman released on his behalf to newsmen.

The president argued that his administration has done its best despite rising poverty and insecurity, particularly in his geo-political zone where abduction of school children recently became rampant.

“We have done our best and thank God for what we have been able to achieve with the available resources, otherwise we would have been in trouble,’’ he explained.

“The subsequent development in the North-West is the most amazing, where people who lived together, spoke (the) same language and shared common faith started killing each other and rustling cows.

“I had to change the security chiefs and we had to get down to the fundamentals of providing security. If you look at the situation in relation to time and resources, you will find out what we have been able to achieve,’’ the president noted.
