Ali Ndume lawmaker representing Borno South at the Senate says the North will benefit more on infrastructure should power return to the South next year.
Mr Ndume, the campaign manager of the Rotimi Amaechi presidential campaign organisation, stated this on Tuesday while featuring on Channels TV, saying power should shift to the South for fairness and equity.
He was responding to the demand by Governor Rotimi Akeredolu that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) should zone the presidency to the South.
The lawmaker recounted that under the administration of former President Goodluck, a southerner, the north benefited hugely and the South is now doing same under the President Muhammadu Buhari administration.
“Personally, I feel we (north) will be better off with a president from the south. The current president comes from the north, if you look at it analytically, the south has benefitted more,” he explained. “If the president comes from the south, we will benefit more, just as we did previously under Jonathan.
“In the area of infrastructure, the south benefitted more. We have the 2nd Niger bridge, the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway and Train. We have the Deep-sea port. We (north) will benefit more if the south gets the presidency,” Mr Ndume added.
He also dismissed insinuations in some quarters that the ruling party will lose the election to the opposing Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) should the later field a Northerner as its candidate for the February 25, 2023 race while the APC picks a Southerner.
“Buhari, as popular as he is, he contested against Jonathan and he lost. Atiku contested against Jonathan and he lost,” he cited. “Many northerners believe in justice, especially the poor. And my religion believes in justice.”
