Like Reps, Senate Approves N30,000 As Minimum Wage

Just like the House of Representatives, the Nigerian Senate has approved N30,000 as the new minimum wage.

The lower chamber at the National Assembly had on January approved the above amount after a bill to that effect was sent by the executive arm of government, headed by President Muhammadu Buhari, to the legislature proposing N27,000.

If Mr Buhari gives his assent to the bill, it will become law and Nigerian Workers will receive the said amount as their new wage, a N12,000 increase from the N18,000 currently being paid.

The approval by the upper chamber was sequel to the recommendation of an ad-hoc committee set up to review the bill, presented its report to the red chamber on Tuesday.

The lawmakers adopted all the recommendations including N75,000 proposed as fine “for not keeping records of employees.”

The Senate Leader, Ahmed Lawan, commended the federal government for its effort on the bill.

The Minority Leader, Biodun Olujimi, urged the federal government to pay more attention to the revenue sharing formula to lawfully enforce compliance by state governments.
