Nyesom Wike, Rivers State governor, has banned the RevolutionNow march in his domain.
The planned peaceful assembly billed to commence today nationwide has also been prohibited by the Federal Government led by President Muhammadu Buhari.
One of the organisers of the protest, Omoyele Sowore, publisher of Sahara Reporters, has been taken into custody with speculations in some quarters that he will likely be charged for treason.
Mr Sowore, an opposition presidential candidate in the last general election lost to Mr Buhari who sought re-election at the time.
Banning the protest in a statement released by his media aide, Simeon Nwakaudu, Wike urged the organisers of the demonstration to steer clear his state.
“Rivers State does not subscribe to what the #RevolutionNow protest represents and Rivers State is not part of the protest,” the statement read.
He directed security agencies in the state to arrest anybody involved in the #RevolutionNow protest and also take all necessary steps to prosecute such persons immediately.
The governor also warned parents and guardians not to allow their wards join the protest as anyone caught will be severely dealt with.
“All council chairmen are directed to be at alert. If they suspect any illegal gathering, they should report to the security agencies for immediate action,” he added.
