Labour Party to name Peter Obi’s substantive running mate Friday, says Okupe

Doyin Okupe, the placeholder of the Vice Presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) says his replacement will be announced on or before Friday, July 8, 2022.

Mr Okupe made this known on Tuesday while featuring on Channels TV, signalling the end of alliance talks with the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) where the LP hoped to field Rabiu Kwankwaso, to deputise Peter Obi, its presidential candidate.

Mr Kwankwaso who is the flag-bearer of the NNPP rebuffed the offer, saying the former Anambra governor should be his running mate, an offer he described as a golden opportunity to bring back the South-East region to limelight politically.

Speaking on the development, Mr Okupe said the search for his replacement will be announced latest Friday.

“This matter (Vice Presidential candidate) will be concluded between tomorrow (Wednesday) and Friday,” the placeholder said. “We are looking for a vibrant, able politician from the northern extraction. The person must have a measure of intellect and sound educational background.”

The LP, NNPP and the All Progressive Congress (APC) are among the political parties that named placeholders, which analysts say is unknown to the Nigerian constitution.
