Kogi West senatorial election declared inconclusive

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared the rerun senatorial election in Kogi West as inconclusive.

The contest is a race between Dino Melaye, who lost his seat at the Senate on the orders of Appeal Court and Smart Adeyemi, who had his petition which called for the cancellation of the exercise granted.

While Melaye is the candidate of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Adeyemi is the flag-bearer of the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC).

The rerun which held on Saturday alongside the governorship election has been declared inconclusive due to the higher number of cancelled votes which is greater than the vote margin the winner is expected to gather.

Olayinde Lawal, the returning officer, made the declaration Sunday night. He said Adeyemi polled a total of 80,118 votes, while Melaye got 59,548 votes. leaving a margin of  20,570 while 43,127 votes were cancelled.

Mr Lawal said a date for the supplementary election expected to hold in polling units would be announced later.

Meanwhile, Melaye has rejected the result of the election, calling for its cancellation.
