The contest is a race between Dino Melaye, who lost his seat at the Senate on the orders of Appeal Court and Smart Adeyemi, who had his petition which called for the cancellation of the exercise granted.

While Melaye is the candidate of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Adeyemi is the flag-bearer of the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC).

The rerun which held on Saturday alongside the governorship election has been declared inconclusive due to the higher number of cancelled votes which is greater than the vote margin the winner is expected to gather.
