Invasion: Court orders FG, Army to apologize, pay Nnamdi Kanu N1billion

The federal government and the Nigerian Army have been ordered to apologize and pay Nnamdi Kanu, detained leader of the Indigenous People Of Biafra (IPOB) the sum of N1 billion for invading the latter’s residence.

Justice Benson Anya gave the order on Wednesday while delivering judgment in a fundamental rights suit filed by Mr Kanu, at the State High Court sitting in Umuahia, the Abia State capital.

BACKSTORY

Mr Kanu being tried for treasonable felony was in 2017 granted bail by a federal high court sitting in Abuja. One of his bail conditions prohibited him from speaking to the press or organizing a rally pending the determination of his trial.

He was alleged to have floated the order by organizing a rally at his Afaraukwu residence in Umuahia but rather than wait for the court to decide, Nigerian soldiers invaders his residence, opening live rounds on all living things in the premises.

The separatist leader escaped during the attack with his whereabouts unknown until a year later when he resurfaced in Israel on his Jewish attire.

He has since then been away from the country until last year June when he was intercepted and mysteriously abducted from Kenya and brought back for the continuation of his trial which he has pleaded not guilty to the amended terrorism charges at a federal high court in Abuja.
