Orji Kalu, the Chief Whip of the 9th Senate, says politics surrounding the next presidential election made him to be imprisoned.
Mr Kalu, a former Abia governor, was tried and convicted in April 2019 over alleged stealing of the state funds while he held sway but regained freedom in June 2020, after the supreme court faulted the verdict of the lower court that slammed 12-year imprisonment on the Abia North lawmaker.
In a statement on Tuesday, Mr Kalu said he regained freedom because of the relationship he has with his creator.
“My conspirators thought I would be president in 2023, so they decided to cut my journey short at all cost,” he said, a claim previously made by Arewa youths.
“But you see, these people are not God. They think I am ashamed to have gone to prison.
“I am not, and I don’t blame them because they don’t know my relationship with God.
“Joseph went to prison, even former President Olusegun Obasanjo went to prison.
“My going to prison is part of my life script, and I am thankful God allowed it.
“They are little minds and wicked people who have refused to do any project for their own people,” he added.
