Group demands implementation of Sharia in South-West

A proposal seeking the implementation of Sharia law in the South-West geo-political zone has been tendered before the Nigerian Senate.

The demand made by The Muslim Congress (TMC) for the promulgation of the Islamic law was submitted on Wednesday during the ongoing zonal public hearing on constitutional amendments in Lagos.

The hearing which is also ongoing at other geo-political zones in the country is aimed at gathering public propoundment for a possible amendment of the 1999 constitution.

“We want to partner for the creation of Sharia courts in the South West because of our population of Muslims,” representative of the religious body, Abdulganiyu Bamidele stated.

Despite the country’s status as a secular state, 12 states in the Northern part of the country implemented Sharia in 1999, triggering controversies while rights of non-Muslims residents have been infringed.
