The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has approved the continued existence of 18 political parties in the country.
The electoral body stated this during a press conference at its national headquarters in Abuja.
It also stated that over 70 political parties were unable to meet the statutory requirements for their continued existence and have been deregistered.
The commission said only one party, Action People’s Party (APP) filed a suit restraining it from deregistering the party.
“75 political parties did not satisfy the requirements of the Fourth Alteration to the Constitution. However, one of the political parties, the APP filed a suit in court and obtained an order restraining the Commission from deregistering it,” the electoral body said in a tweet.
