FG raises hate speech fine to N5M

Lai Mohammed, the Minister of Information and Culture, says the Federal Government has amended the fine for hate speech in the country.

Mr Mohammed made this known in a statement authored by his spokesman, Segun Adeyemi.

Mr Adeyemi said his principal disclosed this at the unveiling ceremony of the reviewed Nigeria Broadcasting Code organized by the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) in Lagos.

“The amended Code also includes the provision raising the fine for hate speech from 500,000 Naira to 5 million Naira,” the minister is quoted as saying.

A bill which intends to give legal backing to it is laying before the national assembly. If it scales through, the president will have to give his assent.

Nigerians, particularly critics of the present administration, are kicking against the bill which earlier stipulated death sentence as penalty for anyone found guilty.
