EFCC places governor Obiano on watchlist

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has placed Governor Willie Obiano on watchlist.

The outgoing Anambra State helmsman will hand over power March next year and it is unclear why the anti-graft agency wrote to the Comptroller General of the Nigeria Immigration Service on November 15 asking that Mr Obiano be placed on watchlist.

State governors and their deputies enjoy immunity from prosecution while in office.

In the letter, the EFCC also demanded that it be furnished with details when the governor uses any entry and exit routes in the country.

When contacted, Wilson Uwajaren, spokesman of the commission feign ignorance, asking for time to respond appropriately but never did so hours later.

The placement followed a similar pattern used to bar former Ekiti State governor, Ayodele Fayose, from leaving the country after the expiration of his tenure in 2018.

The agency under its former acting chairman Ibrahim Magu, TODAY POLITICS recalled wrote to the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) requesting the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) be placed on the latter’s watchlist.

Mr Fayose who submitted himself to the EFCC the day he stepped down from office is currently facing charges bordering on money laundering.
