Edo 2020: Only miracle can prevent me from being reelected – Obaseki

Godwin Obaseki, the governor of Edo State, says except something miraculous happens, he is sure of victory in the September 19 gubernatorial election.

Mr Obaseki stated this after meeting with the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Mohammed Adamu, at the force headquarters in Abuja, today.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate in the next week exercise said, judging by the present political atmosphere in the state, he does not have an opponent in the election and will concede if the defeated in a free and fair contest.

“First, if you have been watching you will see that the election is almost a no contest because we can’t even find the opposition party in the field. So, the issue of me losing is very, very remote, except something miraculous happens,” he said.

“If I lose in a fair contest, as a democrat, I will accept it. But, from what we know today and from evidence of what is available, Edo people have spoken and we just want an opportunity for them to express their views on that day. So, our concern is that people be allowed to vote peacefully and express themselves the way decide,” Obaseki added.

The governor has Osagie Ize-Iyamu, candidate of the All Progressive Congress (APC) to contend with if he must secure another term of four years.

Mr Ize-Iyamu enjoys the backing of Adams Oshiomhole, erstwhile national chairman of the APC and former governor who ensured Obaseki succeeded him in office.
